Thurs.-Sun., Through May 31
I can still smell the homemade gnocchi and over-cooked pot roast Aunt Emma had waiting for Memphis visitors at her home in Clarksdale. A very long time ago when I was a kid — before cruise control, DVD players in cars, or even Gameboys — car-ride scenery to visit rural family consisted of boring stretches of empty fields with an occasional white tent by the side of the road. The white tent signified a good old-fashioned revival was in full swing. I always wanted to stop and see what all the fuss was about. Which is why I am suggesting the Untapped Revival. Go see for yourself what all the fuss is about. I know I’m a convert. If there’s not enough beer for you at the revival, try Hops Into Spring Beer & Burger Fest, Sat., 6 p.m., at the Holiday Inn-University of Memphis benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Playhouse on the Square, 66 S. Cooper
April 9-19
Last year’s festival consisted of varied events in various places. This year’s program is presented mostly at Playhouse on the Square and features a pre-show talk and dinner and a post-show drink and mingle. I did see a neat little event tucked between the standard festival programming that brought a nostalgic smile to my face. On Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to noon POTS is inviting adult children and the standard run-of-the-mill kids alike to stretch out in front of the TV and enjoy Saturday morning cartoons and cereal from the breakfast buffet. Now that’s something to sing about.
Elmwood Cemetery, 824 S. Dudley
Sat., April 11, 10:30 a.m.
We’ve discussed my love of cemeteries in previous blogs. I’ve never shared my love for trees. Now you know. And this tour has elements of both. In the words of my dear sweet mother, “Go outside and play for heaven’s sake!” If you like a whole lot of outside, like into outer space, the “Short Course in Astronomy: The Sky and the Earth” Fri., 8 p.m. at Christian Brothers University looks interesting. If it’s the flora that interests you, Melissa Peterson will be teaching Natural Dyeing: Color from Plants, Sat., 12:30-4:30 p.m. at The Dixon Gallery & Gardens.

Sat., April 11, 7-10 p.m.
Galleries should be made aware that there are some new local artists on the scene. And they are a bunch of animals. That is no exaggeration, they are the animals at the Memphis Zoo. Beer and wine will be served to get everyone in the mood for the silent auction of art by the animals for the animals. The proceeds benefit regional and international conservation programs for endangered species and their habitats. Since we are talking animals check out the 18th Annual Wild Pigs Poker Run, Sun., 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Side Car Cafe. The first time I saw this event I didn’t really know what to make of it. Combine poker with motorcycles, perhaps a smidgeon of Dick Dastardly in the Wacky Races, music, and barbecue benefiting police officers in financial need — and well, there you have it. Meanwhile , it will be a c inch to find something to do in the Pinch on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. when MemFix will be hosting music, food trucks, and pop-up shops. The event will be on N. Main between Jackson and Overton near the location of that little bait shop opening soon.

There are a lot of interesting theater performances this weekend including The Awakeningat TheatreSouth, The Wonderbread YearsatBartlett Performing Arts and Conference Center, and And Baby Makes Seven at Rhodes College’s McCoy Theater. The film Beloved Sisters playing at Memphis Brooks Museum of Art also sounds interesting. My drama pick this week though is everyone’s favorite Peanut, Charlie Brown. The most interesting aspect of this performance is that it is really two performances, one an all children cast and the other an all adult cast giving audiences two unique perspectives. Oh, good grief, just go see it.
